Saavik by Tanya L. Chang Two worlds Light years apart A culture divided through time and space The logic is flawed The emotions run wild Till a wave crashes on a forgotten shore Life abounds on the dry sands of Hellguard A babe cries out to the deaf ears of war Alone and afraid She fights to survive Defending herself from the cruelties of life Ghosts from the past haunt the children of war Strangers pass by, their noses in the air They are blind in their ignorance And see not the pain Small and unwanted With blood stains and tears This one who endures an unending despair Lurks in the shadows She belongs to no one And has nothing She curses her fate But she knows her name which she keeps to herself Her name is her own Not once pronounced Till he appeared and knew what to say "My name is Spock" He smiled at the child all wretched and cold She understood and shared that small part of her Locked deep inside for uncounted years "I am Saavik," she said, "And I have survived."
